Rice production is the main source of income in our Municipality. Series of planting seasons,farmers felt to an end of losing. To improve their yields and income, Philrice assists us through the introduction of new technologies that would suit to the area.
The Rice area in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur is rainfed, hence Palayamanan System is the platform used in the area.
"Palayamanan" or diversified farming system is an old paradigm based on the "bahay kubo"concept of growing crops around the house. The concept was revised given with a new trust to alleviate the system from a subsistence level to entrepreneurail level by combining indigenous knowledge with research generated knowledge and integrating other farming venture to address better resource allocation, food security, and economic stability.
A diversified farming system is a highly intensive method of small-scale farming wherein crop production, aquaculture, and pomology are integrated. It is considered as an alternative system of production that can solve some concerns related to intensive rice production, and an effective approach to combat malnutrition and poverty.
The introduction of the different technologies on rice production following the Palayamanan and Palay Check System has been recognized and validated. And now, the pre-implementation of activities such as baseline data gathering, area mapping and the like were smoothly done and completed.
